| The
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated that in
1997, there were 16,700 fires, 30 deaths, and 430 injuries
associated with clothes dryers. Some of these fires can
occur when lint builds up in the filter or in the exhaust
duct. Under certain conditions, when lint blocks the
flow of air, excessive heat build-up can cause a fire. |

Cleaning (Another overlooked area in the home)
Is it taking longer for your
clothes to dry? Maybe your dryer vent needs
cleaning? A blockage in your dryer vent can restrict the
flow of air. Reduced airflow and the resulting lint
build-up cause overheating by preventing fast enough drying
action. When this happens, the high temperature limit
safety switch has to cycle on and off to control the
heater. Most high temperature limit switches were never
designed to cycle on and off continuously which can cause them
to fail over a period of time. Remember !
There are just as many house fires caused by clogged dryer
vents every year as there are chimney related house fires!
